Char Dham Yatra by Helicopter Package — Complete 2026 Guide
What the Helicopter Circuit Actually Involves
The full Char Dham circuit — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath — by road takes anywhere from 9 to 12 days depending on the itinerary. The distances are real: Uttarkashi is 2.5 hours from Barkot, Kedarnath requires a 16 to 18 kilometre trek from Gaurikund, and the Badrinath drive from Guptkashi alone is 6 hours.
The Char Dham Yatra by Helicopter Package compresses the same four darshans into 6 days. The core reason this works is that helicopter routes bypass the road infrastructure entirely. Sahastradhara Helipad in Dehradun is the departure point. From there, the circuit moves to Kharsali for Yamunotri, Harsil for Gangotri, then Kedarnath, and finally Badrinath — before returning to Dehradun on Day 6.
Each leg of the helicopter journey takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes. The same distance by road would take 4 to 8 hours depending on the stretch.
Day-by-Day: How the 5 Nights 6 Days Are Structured
Day 1 — Arrival in Dehradun
Your trip starts with check-in Dehradun Hotel. An evening briefing covers the next day's helicopter schedule, departure time, weather protocols, and what happens if conditions require a day's delay. Breakfast and dinner included. The pre-departure briefing is not a formality — helicopter operations are weather-dependent, and understanding the contingency plan before Day 2 saves confusion later.
Day 2 — Dehradun to Yamunotri by Helicopter
Early transfer to Sahastradhara Helipad. The helicopter lands at Kharsali Helipad, the airstrip closest to Yamunotri at approximately 2,650 metres. From Kharsali, the Yamunotri Temple is 6 kilometres — covered by pony or palki (at additional cost, arranged on-site). The temple sits at 3,291 metres. After darshan at Yamunaji and time at the Surya Kund hot spring — where pilgrims cook rice as an offering in 88°C water — you return to Kharsali. Overnight at Hotel Yamuna Kriti. Breakfast and dinner included.
Note: The pony and palki ride from Kharsali to Yamunotri Temple is the one unavoidable physical section of this helicopter package. There is no road access to the temple itself. The 6-kilometre track is manageable for most travellers, including elderly pilgrims, but factor this in if mobility is a serious concern.
Day 3 — Yamunotri to Gangotri by Helicopter
Helicopter from Kharsali Helipad to Harsil Helipad, near Gangotri. Gangotri Temple is 25 kilometres from Harsil — covered by private vehicle, which is included in the package. The temple at 3,415 metres is fully road-accessible, so there is no trek involved on this leg.
The ritual here is a holy dip in the Bhagirathi, the name the Ganga carries at this point close to its source. Gangotri is the only one of the four dhams where the glacier — Gaumukh, the actual glacial mouth — is further upstream, 19 kilometres away and accessible only by permit and a two-day trek. That excursion is separate from this itinerary. Darshan, pooja, and time at the riverbank is what Day 3 covers. Overnight at Hotel. Breakfast and dinner included.
Day 4 — Gangotri to Kedarnath by Helicopter
Helicopter from Harsil Helipad to Sersi Helipad. From Sersi, a short shuttle flight of approximately 10 minutes takes you to the Kedarnath Helipad, from where a brief walk brings you to the temple at 3,583 metres. This is the closest the circuit gets to Kedarnath by air — the landing point is near the temple, but there is still a short walk on foot at altitude, so factor that in if anyone in your group has mobility concerns.
After darshan and time at the shrine, you descend back to Sersi and transfer by road to Guptkashi. Overnight at The Turiya Heli Resort, Guptkashi. Breakfast and dinner included.
Day 5 — Guptkashi to Badrinath by Helicopter
After breakfast, helicopter from Sersi Helipad to Badrinath Helipad. Badrinath at 3,300 metres is fully accessible from the helipad — no trek involved on this leg.
VIP darshan at Badrinath Temple is included in the package. After darshan, the afternoon is open for the nearby sites — Mana Village (3 kilometres from the temple and the last inhabited point before the Tibetan border), Vyas Gufa, and Bhim Pul are all within easy reach. Overnight at Hotel Lords Palace, Badrinath. Breakfast and dinner included.
Day 6 — Badrinath to Dehradun by Helicopter and Departure
Early morning visit to Tapt Kund, the natural hot spring adjacent to the temple, before the helicopter departs. This is the traditional final ritual of the Badrinath leg — a dip in the warm water before darshan or before departure. After Tapt Kund, helicopter returns to Dehradun from Badrinath Helipad, landing at Sahastradhara. Your vehicle transfers you to Dehradun Airport or Railway Station. The circuit concludes on Day 6.
What the Package Covers — and What It Does Not
Included: 5 nights premium accommodation. Daily breakfast and dinner at all hotels. All helicopter flights from Dehradun and between each Dham. VIP darshan. Private vehicle transfers between helipads and temple sites where road access exists. Pony, palki, or porter charges at Yamunotri (6 km from Kharsali helipad to temple), Toll taxes, GST, and driver allowance.
Not included: Lunch at any point. Special pooja charges at any temple. Personal expenses. Travel insurance. Additional costs due to weather delays that extend the trip.
One thing worth flagging directly: helicopter schedules in Uttarakhand are weather-dependent. Morning fog, cloud cover, and wind can delay or cancel flights on any given day. This is not a risk unique to this package — it applies to all helicopter operations in the region. Build at least one buffer day into your overall travel schedule before any onward flights or fixed commitments. The briefing on Day 1 in Dehradun is partly designed to set realistic expectations about this.
Who This Package Is Actually For
The Char Dham Yatra by Helicopter Package is often described as the "premium option" in travel listings, which is accurate in terms of cost and services you get.
Who Should Consider This Package
Pilgrims with a week or less available have no realistic road alternative for the full circuit. The standard itinerary needs 9 to 12 days to be done properly — doctors, professionals, NRI pilgrims travelling from abroad, and anyone with a fixed return date cannot stretch that. Six days by helicopter is the only format that fits.
The Kedarnath section is the single biggest physical barrier on the road circuit. At 16 to 18 kilometres of trekking with close to 1,400 metres of elevation gain, it stops some pilgrims from completing the yatra entirely — particularly those with heart conditions, hypertension, or significant joint problems. The helicopter removes that barrier. Combined with the pony and palki option at Yamunotri, it makes a full four-dham circuit possible for pilgrims who had written it off as beyond their physical reach.
The aerial approach to each shrine — particularly Kedarnath, where the temple comes into view against the mountain before you land — is an experience the road version cannot replicate.
Booking for 2026 — What Needs to Happen Early
Helicopter slots for the Char Dham Yatra by Helicopter Package during peak season — late April through mid-June — fill up fast. Kedarnath helicopter seats are consistently the tightest, and with this package, all four helicopter legs need to be confirmed in sequence. Booking 3 to 4 months before your intended travel date is not overcaution — it is the operational minimum for May and early June dates.
Char Dham registration remains mandatory regardless of travel mode. Every pilgrim, whether travelling by road or helicopter, must register on the Uttarakhand Tourism portal before departure. Biometric verification happens at checkpoints. Your coordinator handles the guidance, but the registration itself must be completed in advance of travel.
Temple opening dates in 2026 follow the traditional calendar. Yamunotri and Gangotri typically open in the third week of April; Kedarnath and Badrinath follow within a few days. The temples close in October/November — Kedarnath usually in the first fortnight of November. September and early October offer a quieter window with lower helicopter demand and shorter queues at each shrine, though the weather window narrows as the season progresses.
