What Makes Andaman Different From Other Beach Destinations

One common question is, "Why should I pick Andaman over Goa, Thailand, or the Maldives?" Everyone loves beach vacations, but Andaman is different for a few reasons. Andaman isn’t just about sitting on a sunbed with cocktails or dancing on the beach; it is all about raw, untouched nature that feels like a discovery.

  • When you look at most beach destinations, you will find that they are usually crowded or heavily marketed. But when you browse through the Andaman tours, you will find something more serene. The beaches, especially on Havelock and Neil Island, are amazingly maintained by local people and administration. You won’t find a lot of noise or crowds blocking your view of the ocean. Instead, you get white sands bordered by thick, lush rainforests, which will make you feel so close to nature.
  • Another reason the Andaman holiday is unique is the sheer diversity of the landscape. The Andaman is the place where you will find world-class beaches, a colonial prison with deep historical roots, and active mud volcanoes all within touching distance. Most of our Andaman holiday packages offer this incredible mix of history, nature, adventure, and relaxation. You won’t feel bored in a resort planning the day because there are a lot of things you can do here.
  • Then comes the most amazing part of all, and that's the underwater world. Coral reefs, colorful fishes, and clear blue water, all you can witness on the Andaman beaches. The Andaman and Nicobar tour package options for scuba diving are among the best in the world, and they remain accessible to beginners as well.
  • Lastly, there is the "disconnect to connect" vibe. Internet connectivity can be a bit spotty here (though it’s improving!), which is actually a blessing—you'll find yourself putting the phone down and actually looking at the stars. Do you know about the bioluminescence at Havelock? Kayaking in glowing water is an experience you won't find just anywhere.

So, while the cost of the Andaman holiday package might be slightly higher than a budget train trip to Goa, you get privacy, cleaner waters, and unique adventures, and it is absolutely unmatched.

What You Can Experience in Andaman

While exploring the best tour packages for Andaman, it might feel like looking at a menu with too many delicious options, so we are trying to make it easier for you to decide what to put on your itinerary. Here is a checklist of the best experiences the Andaman Islands have to offer you.

  • Underwater Adventures (Scuba, Sea Walking & Snorkelling)

Scuba diving in Havelock is world-class and should be on your to-do list, even if you don’t know how to swim. While most of our Andaman holiday packages list this as an optional activity, we highly recommend making it a priority. The coral reefs are vibrant and full of life here.
Don’t forget to collect the videos and photos of your scuba diving from your diving instructor.

  • Sea Walking

Many of you may not be familiar with this, but if scuba diving feels a bit too intense, try sea walking at North Bay or Elephant Beach. It is exactly what it sounds like: you wear a special helmet that lets you breathe normally while you walk on the ocean floor surrounded by fish. Sea Walking is perfect for those who wear glasses, as you can keep them on inside the helmet. It is the best thrill that makes every Andaman holiday tour memorable and adventurous.

  • Night Kayaking with Bioluminescence

This is like magic. In Havelock, you can go kayaking at night, where the water glows due to bioluminescent plankton. As you dip your paddle, the water sparkles like neon blue glitter. Photos can’t capture this experience; you have to see it to believe it.

If you are somebody who loves a bit of mystery, a trip to the limestone caves is a must. You take a boat ride through a thick mangrove forest to reach these massive rock formations. When choosing your Andaman package, check if a day trip to Baratang is included, especially if you enjoy raw and almost untouched nature.

  • Planning Your Activities

If you are booking an Andaman tour package from Delhi, you usually have a 6- or 7-day window, which is perfect to cover these highlights. Make sure to keep in mind that activities like scuba diving, sea walking, and night kayaking are usually paid add-ons. So, when you are calculating your total Andaman tour package cost, remember to set aside a separate budget for these adventures.

Top Places to Visit in Andaman

When you are looking through Andaman tour options, you will see a lot of names thrown around: Havelock, Neil, Baratang, Ross, and North Bay. It can get a little confusing. The islands are scattered, and each one has its own unique vibe. Confused? Check out these must-visit spots.

1. Port Blair: Where Culture Meets Coast

Most people rush out of Port Blair, but you should stick around for a day or two.
Cellular Jail (Kaala Paani): Walking through the corridors gives you a glimpse into India’s struggle for freedom. The light and sound show in the evening is fantastic and is usually included in our Andaman tour packages. Tip- Don’t miss the 6 PM show.
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island (Ross Island): The island used to be the British administrative headquarters. You will see friendly deer and peacocks walking around freely.
Chidiyatapu: It is the best sunset spot in Andaman, approx. 16-18 km from the main city. You pass through a lush green forest, and the view is unbeatable.

2. Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep): The Superstar

You can say that this is the main attraction of the Andaman. If you are looking for those "postcard perfect" photos, this is where you go in Andaman.
Radhanagar Beach: The sand is white, the water is turquoise, and the sunset is mesmerizing, which makes it a picture-perfect spot in the evening. Almost all Andaman trip packages will have a full day dedicated to this beach. Most of our packages include the complimentary photoshoot at Radhanagar Beach. Please cross-check with our sales team.
Elephant Beach: This is the hub for water sports like snorkeling, sea walking, scuba diving, and jet skiing. You can reach it by a small boat ride or a short trek through the jungle. Most of our packages include the complimentary snorkeling at Elephant Beach. Please cross-check with our team.
Kalapathar Beach: This is a quieter spot. It’s famous for the black rocks (Kalapathar) that contrast beautifully with the white sand. It’s a great spot for a sunrise if you are an early bird.

3. Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep): The Chill Zone

Neil Island (officially Shaheed Dweep) is a very small island. It is quieter and perfect for just slowing down.
Bharatpur Beach: This is one of the best beaches for swimming because the water is shallow and calm. It’s also great for glass-bottom boat rides if you don’t want to get wet but still want to see the corals.
Laxmanpur Beach: Famous for its triangular sunset view. It’s wide, open, and incredibly breezy.
Natural Bridge: This is a geological wonder, a natural rock formation that looks like a bridge. You have to walk over dead coral to get there during low tide, which is an adventure in itself. Including Neil Island in your itinerary might slightly increase your Andaman tour cost, but the peace you get here is priceless. So try adding this for at least a one night stay.

4. Diglipur: The Hidden Gem

If you have booked a long 7-8 day Andaman tour package from Delhi, you should visit Diglipur in North Andaman.
Ross and Smith Islands: These are twin islands connected by a natural sandbar. At high tide, the sandbar disappears, and at low tide, it reappears, letting you walk from one island to the other, so check the tide timings locally before heading out. It is stunning and usually devoid of crowds.

A Quick Tip on Planning:
Most standard Andaman packages cover Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil. If you want to go to Baratang or Diglipur, you usually need to customize the trip. Also, remember that moving between these islands involves ferries and permits, so having a pre-booked Andaman tour package really saves you the headache of standing in lines for ferry tickets or permits.

Where to Eat in the Andaman Islands?

When you book your Andaman tour packages, you aren't just signing up for beautiful beaches, but you are also looking forward to a seafood feast. Here are a few spots you absolutely must try.

  • Annapurna Cafeteria (Port Blair): Annapurna Cafeteria is a vegetarian restaurant that has served the community for decades, and it is known for its simple meals and offers ample options of vegetarian dishes to suit every palate.
  • Icy Spicy (Port Blair): It is at Junglighat, Port Blair, and offers pure vegetarian meals! It offers mithais, tangy chaats, delectable eggless bakes, and a wholesome dining experience.
  • Rajasthani Dhaba (Port Blair): A local vegetarian restaurant that offers traditional Indian dishes such as rice and naan with different curries. Open Mon-Sun 6:30am-10:00pm.
  • Full Moon Cafe (Havelock Island): Located near Dive India, this cozy cafe is famous for its relaxed vibe. It is often a favorite stop for couples in romantic Andaman tour packages.
  • Something Different (Havelock Island): A playful, family-friendly beachside cafe. Many tour package itineraries recommend this spot for a hearty lunch near the jetty because the food is consistently delicious.
  • Tango Beach Restaurant, Shaheed Dweep (Neil Island): Located right on Laxmanpur Beach, this spot is perfect for a candlelight dinner with sand between your toes. It’s a great addition to your itinerary without blowing up your Andaman tour package cost, offering fresh seafood and chill vibes.

Know before you go to Andaman

Do Indians need a permit for the Andaman Islands? Indian nationals do not need a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for the main tourist islands—Port Blair, Havelock, Neil, and Baratang Island. However, certain tribal-protected areas like North Sentinel and some Nicobar Islands are completely off-limits to all visitors.

Do foreign nationals need a permit for the Andaman Islands? Yes, for foreign nationals, a RAP is required and is issued free of charge on arrival at Port Blair airport. It is valid for 30 days. Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your date of travel. Our team handles all permit-related paperwork for international guests as part of our package.

Our Andaman team has been on the ground here for years. The tips in this guide come from hundreds of real trips we have planned and accompanied. If something feels off when you are booking, just ask us—we have probably dealt with it before. This guide was put together by Dev Gupta, our Andaman travel specialist, who has been coordinating island trips since 2017. He has personally walked the Baratang limestone trail, dived at Elephant Beach, and knows which ferry to avoid on a Monday morning.

How to Reach the Andaman?

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are in the middle of the Bay of Bengal, so you can’t take a road trip or a train to get there. You are going to cross the ocean. There are two options: fly or sail.

By Air (The Best & Fastest Way)

Taking a flight is the most convenient way to start your vacation. You will land at the Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair. This is the main entry point for almost all Andaman tours. Connectivity has gotten so much better over the years. There are direct flights from major cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Delhi.

Andaman tour package from Delhi: If you are booking flights from Delhi to Port Blair, the flight takes about 4+ hours (direct) or longer if you have a layover. A pro-tip here: As flight prices are dynamic and it is a major chunk of your total Andaman package cost, try to book your tickets at least 2-3 months in advance to get a good deal.

Andaman tour package from Kolkata or Chennai: These are the shortest flights, usually just around 2 to 3 hours.

Andaman tour package from Bangalore: Andaman packages are very popular in Bangalore, as it has approx. 2 hours 35 minutes, mostly nonstop flights, and comparatively cheaper prices than Delhi.

By Sea (The Adventurous Way)

If you have a lot of time and want to experience life on the high seas, you can take a ship. Government-operated ships run from Chennai, Kolkata, and Visakhapatnam.
Remember, these are passenger ships, not luxury cruise liners like the ones you see in movies with swimming pools, casinos, and lots of fun. The journey takes about 3 to 4 days and has multiple stay options, so check the cruise details before booking.

The best tour packages for the Andaman do not include this journey because it takes up too much time. However, if you are on a long trip and have an ample amount of time, then you should experience this for sure. But for a regular 5-6 day trip, choose the flight options.

Inter-Island Travel (Getting Around Once You Are There)

Once you land in Port Blair, you can’t just take a taxi to Havelock or Neil Island; you need to take a ferry. This is where our Andaman Nicobar tour package saves you from standing in queues to purchase ferry tickets or negotiating with taxi drivers.
There are government ferries (cheaper but slower), which are majorly used by islanders and cost around INR 100 for islanders; they typically cost INR 600-900 for tourists. Private luxury catamarans like Makruzz, Nautica, and Green Ocean are faster and AC-equipped. Private ferries are more expensive than government ferries, but the comfort and time saved are well worth the extra cost.

If you book one of the comprehensive Andaman tour packages with us, we will pre-book these ferry tickets for you. You won't wish to stand in a long queue at the jetty at 6 AM trying to buy a ticket.

Best Time to Visit Andaman: When to Book Your Trip

So, when should you actually pack your bags? Here's our honest suggestion: timing can make or break your island vibe. You don’t want to land and stress out to find out the ferries are cancelled because of a storm.

  • Most people book their Andaman tour package between October and May. Why? Because the Bay of Bengal is unpredictable during the rains, and you need the sea to be calm for the ferries to run smoothly between Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil.
  • If you love water sports, scuba diving, snorkeling, or sea walking, you absolutely need to visit during these dry months. The visibility underwater is perfect. You will see the highest demand for Andaman tour packages around December and January. The weather is pleasant (not too hot, not too humid), and the water is crystal clear. It is peak season, and because everyone wants to go there at this time, the Andaman tour package's cost tends to spike a bit. Hotels get booked out fast, and flight prices go up. If you are planning an Andaman tour package from Delhi or other major cities for a Christmas or New Year trip, book your package at least 3 months in advance to avoid paying too much extra.
  • What about the monsoon (June to September)? The islands become incredibly green and beautiful, but the risk of ferry cancellations is high. If you are okay with just chilling in a resort and not doing water sports, you might find a cheaper Andaman and Nicobar tour package during this time. For the full experience, including beach hopping and diving, stick to the dry season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Andaman is famous for blue beaches, water sports, and islands. Many people book Andaman tour package to enjoy nature and sea.

October to May is when most people visit, and for good reason — the sea is calm, ferries run on schedule, and the underwater visibility for diving and snorkelling is at its best. December and January are the most popular months. The weather is pleasant, not too hot, and the water is incredibly clear. If you are planning to travel in December or January, book at least 2 to 3 months in advance because hotels on Havelock fill up fast and flight prices go up noticeably.June to September is monsoon season. The islands look beautiful — very green and lush — but rough seas mean ferries between islands frequently get cancelled. Water sports stop operating entirely during this period. If you are fine with staying in one place and relaxing, you can find good deals during monsoon. But if island hopping and diving are the main reasons you are going, wait for the dry months.

Hotel stay, transfers, sightseeing, water activities and ferry. Most Andaman tour package cover all main things.

Yes, very romantic and private. Couples love Andaman tour package for peaceful time and beach views.

Five nights and six days is the most practical window for first-time visitors. That gives you two nights in Port Blair, two nights in Havelock, and one night on Neil Island — enough time to do the main sightseeing, try at least one water activity, and not feel like you are rushing through everything. If you only have four nights, you can still do a decent trip but will likely have to skip Neil Island. For seven or eight nights, you can add Baratang's limestone caves or the twin islands at Diglipur in North Andaman, both of which are worth the extra days if nature is your thing.

Yes, and this is something we hear a lot from our guests after they return. Andaman is one of the safer island destinations in India. The local population is small and tight-knit, the tourist infrastructure is well-managed, and the main islands — Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil — are well-lit and relatively easy to get around. That said, common sense applies just as it would anywhere. Avoid isolated beaches after dark, stick to known areas at night, and if you are taking the Baratang trip, it is better to go as part of a group or organised tour rather than alone because the route passes through forest areas with limited mobile connectivity.

No, Indian nationals do not need any special permit for the main tourist islands — Port Blair, Havelock, Neil, and Baratang. You just need a valid government-issued photo ID. The areas that are off-limits entirely — like North Sentinel Island and parts of the Nicobar group — are restricted for everyone, Indian or foreign, without exception. Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit, which is free and issued on arrival at Port Blair airport. It covers a 30-day stay and is valid for all the main tourist spots. Carry a copy of your hotel booking when you land, as that is sometimes asked for at the counter.

They are different in a way that actually makes visiting both worthwhile. Havelock is bigger, more developed, and has more to do — Radhanagar Beach, Elephant Beach, scuba diving, sea walking, night kayaking, and a good range of restaurants and resorts. If you have limited time and want the classic Andaman experience, Havelock is where to focus. Neil Island is smaller and much quieter. There are fewer tourists, fewer options, and the pace is noticeably slower. Bharatpur Beach is excellent for swimming, the Natural Bridge is a genuinely unusual thing to see, and the sunset at Laxmanpur is one of the better ones in Andaman. Neil works well as a one-night add-on at the end of your Havelock stay — it gives you a chance to decompress before heading back to Port Blair. If you are choosing one, choose Havelock. If you have an extra day, add Neil.

Sea walking is an underwater activity where you wear a weighted helmet that supplies air, allowing you to breathe normally while walking on the ocean floor at around 3 to 5 metres depth. You do not need to know how to swim. You do not need to hold your breath. And unlike scuba diving, you can wear your glasses inside the helmet, which a lot of people find reassuring. It is offered at North Bay Island near Port Blair and at Elephant Beach on Havelock. Children above 8 years old can participate, provided they meet the minimum height requirement at the operator's counter (usually around 4.5 feet). Elderly travellers can do it too, though anyone with a history of ear infections, heart conditions, or respiratory issues should check with their doctor first. It costs around ₹4000to ₹6000 per person depending on the operator.

Yes. The beginner's option — called a Discovery Dive or introductory dive — is specifically designed for people who cannot swim. You are paired with a certified dive instructor who stays with you throughout, the dive depth is kept to 5 to 9 metres, and the full session including briefing and gear fitting takes about 45 minutes. You spend roughly 20 to 30 minutes actually underwater. The minimum age is 10 years. The health restrictions are sensible ones: active ear infections, recent surgery, asthma, and certain heart conditions are reasons to skip it. If you are unsure, the dive centre at Havelock (there are several reputable ones near Radhanagar and Elephant Beach) will ask you to fill a health form before you start. Do not skip the briefing even if it feels slow — it covers the two or three hand signals that matter underwater.

Here is a straightforward list based on what our guests consistently rate highest: Scuba diving at Havelock — ₹3,500 to ₹4,500 per person for a beginner dive. Prices vary by operator. Sea walking at North Bay or Elephant Beach — ₹4000to ₹6,000 per person. Night kayaking with bioluminescence at Havelock — ₹2,000to ₹3,000 per person. Runs from around 7 PM. Book it for a moonless night if possible. Snorkelling at Elephant Beach — often included as a complimentary activity in packages. If booked separately, around ₹500 to ₹800. Cellular Jail Sound and Light Show — ₹300 per person. Included in most packages. The 6 PM show is the one to attend. Baratang limestone caves day trip — around ₹3,000 to ₹4,000per person including boat and transport. Usually a full-day excursion from Port Blair. Glass-bottom boat ride at Bharatpur Beach, Neil Island — ₹,1500 to ₹2,000 per person. A good option for those who do not want to get in the water but still want to see the coral.

Most people either overpack or forget the things that actually matter. Here is what consistently proves useful:Reef-safe sunscreen — this is not just an ethical consideration. Some beaches and dive operators in Andaman now ask for it specifically, and your skin will thank you given how strong the sun is between November and April.A light rain jacket or poncho — even in peak season, brief showers happen. They pass quickly but being caught on a ferry or at a beach without cover is uncomfortable.Waterproof phone pouch — for the boat rides and beach days. The spray from a catamaran on a choppy day is enough to soak a bag.Motion sickness tablets if you are prone — the crossing from Port Blair to Havelock can get rough depending on conditions. Government ferries especially. Take the tablet before you board, not after you start feeling it.Cash in smaller denominations — ATMs exist in Port Blair and on Havelock, but they run out of cash during peak season. Neil Island has limited ATM access. Carry enough cash for activities, meals, and tips before you leave Port Blair.Underwater camera or a waterproof case — your phone photos from land will be fine, but the underwater stuff is where the memories are. Dive centres rent cameras but the quality is variable.Light cotton clothes for evenings — it is warm year-round but evenings on Neil Island can feel breezy. A light layer is enough.Flip flops and one pair of shoes with ankle support — flip flops for beaches and resort areas, proper shoes for the Baratang trek and the walk to Cellular Jail.

This comes up more often lately, and it is a fair concern. The short answer is that Andaman is still very much worth it, but the experience has changed depending on where you go. Port Blair and the main stretch of Havelock near the jetty area have gotten busier over the years. You will notice more resorts, more tour operators, and more people at Radhanagar Beach during peak hours in December and January. That said, Andaman is nowhere near as crowded as Goa or the popular Thai islands. Neil Island still feels genuinely quiet. Baratang sees very few tourists relative to its size. Diglipur in the north barely has any tourist infrastructure at all. If you time your Radhanagar Beach visit for early morning rather than the popular 4 PM sunset slot, you will often have long stretches of it to yourself. The coral at Elephant Beach has seen some bleaching over the years, which is worth knowing if pristine reef is your main goal, but the marine life is still active and the diving is still well above average for India. Overall, go. Just manage your expectations around the main beach timings and you will be fine.
