The Char Dham Yatra covers four sacred pilgrimage sites in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Organised as a unified spiritual circuit by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century, these four shrines sit at high altitudes across one of the most dramatic landscapes in India.
In Hindu tradition, completing the Char Dham Yatra is believed to cleanse one of past sins and support the pursuit of Moksha — liberation from the cycle of birth and death. The traditional route follows a clockwise sequence: Yamunotri → Gangotri → Kedarnath → Badrinath. This sequence mirrors a journey from origin, through endurance, toward completion — and you feel every stage of that arc as the days pass.
The yatra is open from late April to November each year. The most popular windows are May–June and September–October.
Yamunotri is the source of the Yamuna River and the first stop on the traditional Char Dham circuit. The trek from Janki Chatti to the temple is approximately 6 km one way, rising to an altitude of 3,291 metres.
The mountain here demands patience from the first hour. Natural hot water springs (kunds) sit right beside the shrine. The Surya Kund is hot enough to cook rice, which pilgrims actually do by wrapping raw rice in cloth and dipping it in. Bathing before darshan is a tradition you should not skip.
Gangotri sits at 3,100 metres with a motorable road going almost to the temple — making it the most accessible of the four Dhams. After the Yamunotri trek, this feels like relief. But Gangotri does something to you quietly.
The Bhagirathi River runs right beside the temple complex. In the evening, when the aarti lamps reflect on the water against high Himalayan peaks, experienced pilgrims say they remember this moment more vividly than almost any other part of the yatra.
Kedarnath is where the yatra stops being symbolic and becomes deeply personal. The shrine sits at 3,583 metres and requires an 18 km trek one way from Gaurikund. The ancient stone temple survived the devastating 2013 floods while everything around it was destroyed. When you arrive after the trek and see it there, the exhaustion becomes irrelevant.
The morning Abhishek puja (4–7 AM) offers VIP darshan — book in advance during peak season.
After Kedarnath, Badrinath is a different kind of arrival. The road goes all the way to the temple. After days of altitude and effort, this feels like the yatra allowing you to breathe. The Tapt Kund — a natural hot water spring just below the temple — is one of the finest things about Badrinath. After 10 days in cold mountain air, stepping into warm sacred water before the final darshan is something that cannot be adequately described.
Nearby, Mana Village (3 km away) is the last Indian village before the Tibet border. Included in our packages — not a hurried photo stop.

You do not need to be an athlete. A 3–4 km brisk walk daily for a month before departure makes a significant difference at Kedarnath altitude. Add Pranayama breathing exercises to improve lung efficiency. If you have heart disease, hypertension, or respiratory conditions, consult your doctor and carry a medical fitness certificate — some checkpoints require it.
Acute Mountain Sickness causes headache, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue. If symptoms appear, stop climbing and descend immediately — never push through AMS at higher altitude. Drink 3–4 litres of warm water daily. No alcohol throughout the yatra.
Government medical camps operate on the Yamunotri and Kedarnath trek routes during the pilgrimage season. Oxygen cylinders are stationed at key points. Always carry your own basic kit regardless.
The entire Char Dham route is strictly vegetarian and alcohol-free. The food is simple, warm, and exactly what the body needs at altitude.
What you'll eat and appreciate: Dal chawal, roti sabzi, khichdi, aloo paratha, hot chai. At higher points, Maggi noodles become genuine comfort food. At Badrinath, chana-puri prasad after darshan is a ritual in itself and not to be missed.
What to avoid: Raw salads, cold stored food from roadside stalls, anything prepared with unfiltered water. Stick to freshly cooked, hot meals. Our packages include breakfast and dinner at hotels.
An important Shiva temple included in standard packages on the way to Kedarnath. The ancient idol here is believed to be the one moved from Kashi centuries ago.
The highest Shiva temple in the world at 3,680 metres. A side trek from Chopta, requiring an extra half-day. Available as an optional add-on to the itinerary.
The five sacred river confluences: Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Nandprayag, Vishnuprayag. Our drivers stop at Devprayag where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda merge to become the Ganga — the view from the bridge there is unmissable.
The last Indian village before the Tibet border. Bhim Pul, the Saraswati River origin, and the cave where the Mahabharata is said to have been composed. Included in our Badrinath day itinerary.

"The Kedarnath trek was harder than I expected, but the Vacationum team had planned everything — pony booked in advance for my mother, hotel at base confirmed, coordinator there at every stop. Highly recommended." — Anit Datta, Repeat Char Dham Pilgrim
"We were a group of 12 including two seniors above 70. Not once did we feel rushed. The driver knew every mountain bend and the coordinator sorted every issue before it became a problem." — Abhishek Sharma, Group Yatra 2026
"Booked the private package from Dewas (Madhya Pradesh). Airport pickup was on time, hotels were clean and warm, and registration was handled without us having to figure anything out ourselves." — Pankaj Bajaj, Private Char Dham Package 2025
The Kedarnath trek at 5 AM in a headlamp. The Gangotri aarti with lamps reflecting on the Bhagirathi. Stepping into the Tapt Kund at Badrinath after 10 days on the road. None of it is convenient. All of it is worth it.
The Char Dham Yatra changes something in the people who complete it — not always dramatically, but in the way that quiet, difficult, meaningful things do. Year after year, pilgrims return. Not because they forgot what it cost them, but because they remember exactly what it gave them.

Our Chardham Yatra package includes hotel stays, daily meals (breakfast and dinner), transfers, and guided sightseeing at all Char Dhams – Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. All arrangements are made to ensure your spiritual journey is comfortable and well-managed.
Late April to June is the most comfortable window — pleasant weather and clear mountain mornings. September to mid-October is the second-best slot with fewer crowds. Avoid July–August monsoon where possible.
Yes, the Chardham Yatra is safe, but it does involve travel through hilly terrain and walking. Senior citizens should consult a doctor before planning and opt for a custom Chardham Yatra package with slower pacing, shorter drives, or even helicopter services where possible.
Most Chardham Yatra packages are planned for 10 to 12 days, depending on the itinerary and how much time you want to spend at each destination. Some shorter or longer packages are also available based on your needs.
Carry warm clothes, comfortable walking shoes, a raincoat, a small torch, medicines, and your ID proofs. The weather can change quickly in the mountains, so it’s better to be prepared while traveling with your Chardham Yatra package.
Yes. Aadhaar-linked registration is compulsory. Register free at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in or via the Tourist Care Uttarakhand app. Without a valid QR code, temple entry is denied.
Yes. The helicopter package involves no major trekking. Road packages include pre-booked pony and palki at Yamunotri and Kedarnath, ground-floor rooms, slower pacing, and a dedicated coordinator throughout.
Our packages have buffer days built in. We monitor route conditions and government advisories daily. Hotel rescheduling due to weather is managed at no extra cost to the pilgrim.
We honestly advise against it. Landslides, road closures, and helicopter cancellations are common. If monsoon is your only option, choose a fully flexible package and purchase comprehensive travel insurance.
Call or WhatsApp +91 98711 90075 with your city and travel dates. We arrange everything from your arrival airport or station. Packages depart from all major Indian cities.
BSNL has the best coverage across the route. Jio and Airtel work in towns and lower altitudes. At Kedarnath and upper Badrinath, expect limited or no network. Download offline maps and save all contacts before departing.
Our itinerary has built-in flexibility at key stops. If a temple is inaccessible on a scheduled day, we adjust the plan and arrange darshan the following morning. This is precisely why buffer days matter in a Char Dham package.
