If your Volvo drops you at the Private Bus Stand, local auto-rickshaws often charge ₹300–500 for a 2-km ride to Mall Road or Old Manali — heavily inflated. Know the fair rate (₹80–120) before stepping off, or pre-book hotel pickup with us so a driver is waiting.

HRTC is generally the safer, more reliable choice for a first Manali trip. Book 7–14 days ahead in peak season (May–June); 5–7 days in shoulder months. HRTC online booking (hrtchp.com) opens ~30 days ahead.
The Volvo bus is the most popular route, but here's how flight and road/train options compare.
Bhuntar Airport (KUU) is 50 km from Manali, ~1.5–2 hrs by road (2–3 hrs in peak-season traffic). Flight schedules are limited and can change by season and operating conditions, so check the current schedule before booking or contact us. Cab from Bhuntar: ~₹800–1,200.
From Delhi: ~530 km via NH 44 and NH 3, 10–12 hrs with breaks. From Chandigarh: ~310 km, ~5.5–6 hrs — the most comfortable self-drive corridor to Manali.
Overnight trains from Delhi reach Chandigarh in ~3–4 hrs, then a 5.5–6 hr road transfer to Manali. Good for travellers who prefer daytime mountain driving over an overnight bus. Verify timings on irctc.co.in.
Bhuntar is a challenging mountain airport and flights can be affected by weather, visibility and operational conditions. Always keep the overnight Volvo as a backup plan if you're flying in. Morning flights have noticeably better clearance rates than afternoon departures.

HRTC operates electric buses from Manali bus stand directly to the Rohtang snow points. Because they're government EVs, they're completely exempt from the NGT permit quota. The expanded 2026 circuit (Rohtang + Atal Tunnel + 10 attractions) costs ₹700 per person round trip, departing 8 AM, 8:30 AM and 9 AM from the Manali bus stand. Cross check all the timing in advance before booking as timing can be changed. Book at the HRTC counter — no permit hassle at all.
You want the snow and high-altitude views, it's not Tuesday, and you have a permit sorted (or plan the EV bus).
It's closed, your permit didn't come through, or you want Lahaul's scenery without any permit logistics.
You leave by 6:30 AM — Rohtang first for morning light, then the tunnel into Lahaul for Sissu Lake. For most visitors, keep Rohtang and the Atal Tunnel–Sissu circuit as separate sightseeing days. Combining them is possible only when road conditions, access restrictions and daylight allow.
The road to the Atal Tunnel's South Portal jams badly in May–June and late December — leave by 6:30 AM or expect a 3-hour crawl after 9:30 AM. Entering Lahaul (Sissu side) also requires a small SADA Green Tax barrier fee, ~₹50–300 for cars, paid on the spot.

The Solang–Rohtang snow circuit is predictable in-season, and logistics are simpler overall.

A 1553 CE pagoda-style wooden temple in a cedar forest, dedicated to Hadimba Devi from the Mahabharata. Made almost entirely of deodar cedar, four tiers, carved doorways. Go before 9 AM to avoid tour groups — the forest walk itself is half the experience.

Rohtang Pass access can be restricted temporarily for maintenance, weather, road conditions or administrative reasons. Check the official District Kullu permit portal for your exact travel date before planning the visit. Bargaining is standard on Mall Road and market stalls. Bhuttico and Himachal Emporium (government-run) have fixed, reliable prices.

Manali sits at 2,050 m — generally comfortable, but Rohtang at 3,978 m can bring headaches, nausea or breathlessness. Go slowly on day one, drink water consistently, skip alcohol the first night, and don't plan Rohtang on your very first day.
Apply online at rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in up to a few days before your visit. The permit is non-refundable and non-transferable, and it's tied to your vehicle's registration number.
Old Manali's smaller cafés, market stalls and the Vashisht hot springs entry are cash-preferred. ATMs can run empty during peak-season long weekends — carry ₹3,000–5,000 for a typical sightseeing day.
Even in May–June, Manali evenings drop below 15°C and the Rohtang road can be near-freezing. Carry a fleece and windproof jacket for any outdoor day.
Rapido and local taxis work well in town; auto-rickshaws cover short hops in Old Manali. For day trips (Naggar, Rohtang, Manikaran) agree the total fare with the driver upfront — there are no meters.
If flying into Bhuntar, always keep the Volvo bus as a fallback — cancellations due to cloud cover are frequent, especially in spring and monsoon months.

The Atal Tunnel is a **9.02-km tunnel** through the Pir Panjal range, ~25 km from Manali — certified by the World Book of Records as the world's longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet. Unlike Rohtang Pass (51 km, permit required, closed Tuesdays), the Atal Tunnel requires no tourist permit, is open most of the year, and takes you to Sissu in Lahaul — which has its own excellent scenery.
Yes. All vehicles need an NGT permit obtained online from rohtangpermits.hp.gov.in. The fee is typically in the ₹500–600 range — verify the current amount on the portal before booking. Apply as early as possible (permits can be applied for a few days ahead). Closed every Tuesday. Vehicle restrictions apply and are subject to periodic updates — check the portal for current rules. **Budget alternative:** HRTC electric buses (₹700/person round trip) are permit-exempt and depart from Manali bus stand at 8 AM, 8:30 AM and 9 AM.
